In the Office's 2007 research Public Understanding of Censorship (PDF V 7.0, 1.33mb) it was noted that only 68% of New Zealanders knew what the M classification label means. Twenty-three percent had an incorrect understanding of the label while 9% were unsure of its meaning.
The M label was introduced with the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. When a film receives an M label, this means that it is unrestricted (meaning anyone can view it) but it is recommended for persons aged 16 years and over.
Under the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993, films which receive an unrestricted rating (G, PG, or M) in Australia are automatically cross-rated to receive the same rating in New Zealand. This process is carried out by the Film and Video Labelling Body. Therefore the majority of unrestricted films do not come to the Classification Office.
Films with an M label will contain storylines and subject matter that is targeted at an older audience, and thus M films (and DVDs) will contain different material from films which carry a PG rating. It is also important to remember that not all G or PG level films are made for children and many are aimed at an adult audience.
When considering whether or not to take children to an M rated film, remember that the film is recommended for persons aged 16 and over. It is also a good idea to read the descriptive note which accompanies the rating to get an indication of the sorts of content that will be included in the film. Content in an M film may include such things as violence, sexual references, offensive language and drug use.
A Mighty Heart - Contains offensive language and content that may disturb
Atonement - Contains violence, offensive language and sex scenes
Michael Clayton - Contains violence and offensive language
The Good German - Contains violence, offensive language and sex scenes
The Dark Knight - Contains violence
Transformers - Contains medium level violence
I am Legend - Contains violence and horror
Cloverfield - Contains fantasy violence
Juno - Contains offensive language
