The Office of Film and Literature Classification is the Government body responsible for classifying publications that may need to be restricted or banned. The legal definition of a 'publication' covers a wide range of mediums such as films, videos, music recordings, books, magazines and computer games.
New Zealand society is protected from the harm cause by the unrestricted avaliability of restricted and objectionable publications.
The Office will acheive this by balancing the values inherent in the freedom of expression with the value of a society protected from injury.
